Gardeners/homeowners, please help with landscaping of new home…?

We are first time homebuyers, and got a beautifully landscaped front yard, and back yard.
Now, we don't know the first thing about gardening, but are willing to learn.
What are the first tools we need? We don't even know about hoses, lawn mowers, etc. Please give us the names of the tools we need immediately, and brand names.
When I go shopping, I just get overwhelmed by the different brands out there.
So, initiate us into the world of gardening.

p.s. We have 3 rose bushes in the front, that are too tall and we want them to go. Lots of bushes in front that we want to select and weed out some. Want to spread grass under some trees or shady area. I know these are lots of questions, but someone can answer one or all. Thanks.

If you have not processed through questions, #1 to #3, plz do so.
Now, IF the computer is used for EDUCATIONAL purposes, YES, if for chit - chat NO!!!
Auto damage :: If the auto was damaged as a result of the 'event', yes, you will need your insurance info handy. btw It is illegal to operate an automobile on the highways, without a windshield !!
Garden tools, If you have a receipt post dating the event, and the tools are for repair, cleanup, etc. probably, yes. Lawn mower? I don't know, unless for the power.
Now, THE HOME !!!! Have ALL of the Insurance info handy !!!! As thoughts come to you during this extremly trying time, make notes on the note pad, which you are smart enough to carry with you, at all times. What more can I say??
I truely regret that my heart attack in February, and massive hemorage in March, all this year, prevented my recertifing before the time limit, late March, 2007.
I WOULD LOVE TO BE ABLE TO COME TO CALIFORNIA, AND HELP FELLOW AMERICANS !!!

Here's what I'll buy from your company if you will just be kind enough to start manufacturing them. It probably won't even involve getting a new patent, just remake some things so they work better.

1) Stop making pencils, pens, lipstick, etc. in cylandrical shapes. I am tired of chasing them when they roll off the table.

2) Start making paper shredders with a handle on the top, so that they can be emptied without placing the top on the floor and spilling paper shreds everywhere.

3) I would like a smaller, quieter lawn mower. About the size of a vacuum cleaner.

4) While you're at it, I'd like garden tools for women. No, I don't want pink garden tools, just tools that utilize lower body strength instead of upper body strength. Example: put a foot bar on "the Garden Weasle."

5) Please make a small device whose only functiuon is to chime or beep softly every 15 minutes when motion is not detected. This device can be attached to car keys, remotes, or other stuff I lose.
And I didn't mean to "star" my own question just now (blush!)
