Aeration is the best way to improve air/gas exchange and water/nutrient intake. Its very simple.The best tools to use is an Aerator. Get an Aerator with a seeder tray which can disperse seeds at the same time. Fertilizing could also be a good idea.

You can use a garden weasle or pitch fork. They also sell these contraptions which you strap on your shoes and walk over the lawn making holes in the turf. I have found watering before aerating to be helpful as I have rock hard decomposed granite soil which is difficult to penetrate. The pitch fork takes a lot of effort but does a fine job.

Wildlife and butterflys travel during the different seasons we have. During our fall months most head south for the warm weather. Where they can flurish and not die from harsh weathers. After winter is over and the weather start to warm. They start to migrate north again. To the areas where they mate, lay eggs and hatch out new birds, and larva (for butterflys).
Well along this journey, they need places to rest, get a drink or eat. This was the beginning and why wildlife certified gardens started. They needed a safe place to go, to migrate to and from. Then as word got out about these concerned citizens and what they were doing to attract the wildlife to stop at their place on their way of flight. Others who enjoy the company of birds, butterflys, benifical insects, hummingbirds, wanted to keep them close by so they could view them most of the time.
To become a certified Wildlife garden you have guidlines that must be meet. Water requirements, Plants that provide, food, rest, nesting, and places for safety. Once you pass ALL of these, you must also get a permit from the county in some areas to even keep your gardens as a certified garden. Mostly because, these gardens don't look like your tipical manicured garden. Most code and county workers think you are growing weeds all over your yards. It is only the more well enformed individual who see and ask, "Why are you doing this to your yards". And then for the avid gardner who repilies, "The land gives to me, so I take care of mothers natures critters".

First off – why did it need replacing? Did it break or get bent somehow? If something major happened to the crank, meybe theres other underlying issues inside the motor.
When you replaced the crank, on the flywheel side, did you install a new flywheel key? Those can only be used ONCE- its the whole purpose- to shear if theres a problem to avoid damaging the motor. Id recheck all the work youve done, and make sure .
To be honest, if something goes bad inside a motor, like a crank or rod- Its cheeper in the long run to just get a replacement motor.

My first question to you is, have you mowed your own lawn before? If you haven't, I would start there and learn the different settings of a lawn mower. You have to know your cold weather and warm weather grass types. Bermuda is a warm weather grass and doesn't have to be mowed as much as Fescue.
Before starting any type of business, you must have the knowledge to present yourself to potential clients. Unless you have access to a truck to haul your materials around, you will have to stay in your neighborhood. This could be a good start for you. Learn how to use a blower and a trimmer. These are other tools you will need. Besides gas, you will periodically have to put some oil in the mower. Practice on some lawns before you even begin to approach customers.

Hate to say it but if you want a lawn like the greens at St Andrews, its going to take a bit of work but I hope I can help. I have been renovation lawns just today, so this is how I do it:
1) Give your lawn a mow with the blades of the mower set a medium height and remove the clippings. This will even out the length of the grass and pick up any debris like leaves.
2) Scarify, this basically means raking out all the moss and thatch (dead grass). You could hire a machine for the job from a tool hire shop but if your lawn is not too big you can do it by hand with a spring tine rake, its hard work! You can put the moss and thatch in a compost bin, it will rot down slowly.
3) Go back over the lawn with your mower, it will pick up any long straggly bits of grass and any bits of moss and thatch left laying.
4) Aerate; making lots and lots of small holes in your lawn so oxygen can get down to the grass roots and also to improve drainage. Again you can hire a machine which will remove cores of soil, or another which just makes thin slits in the lawn. the choice is yours which one, but if you use the one which takes out cores of soil you will need to rake them all up and use more top dressing to fill the holes. Alternatively if your lawn is quite small use garden fork make the holes about 10cm deep and about 10-20cm apart.
5) Still reading? Ok then! Topdress, Topdressing is a mix of 3 parts medium-fine sand 2parts sieved soil and 1 part peat, you can also add in grass seed if your lawn is really patchy. If you live near St Andrews there is a company called Archie Hunter Garden Supplies that will deliver ready mixed top dressing to you. TEL: 0131 4404500 Spread the top dressing at a rate of 1kg/m2 but if you have removed cores of soil you will need about 3kg/m2. Use a tool called a lute or drag mat to brush the topdressing into the lawn, a lute is great for levelling out any uneven patches in the lawn. If you can't get a hold of either of these tools a stiff brush is nearly as good.
6) Last stage, apply a autumn lawn feed at the manufactures recommended application rate, or if there are a lot of weeds in you lawn and some moss left over use a autumn weed feed and moss killer.
7) I lied this is the last section! Grass seed, any seed mix which has a high proportion of Festuca rubra (red fescue) should give you a fine grass, good for patching with.

go with a hydroponics setup which would only be the weight of water and containers-and a lot less water than when using soil. or use a lighweight soilless mixture. or you can have a green roof which is nice but complicated and costly,using 5mil. plastic membranes btwn roof and several layers of soil/soilless mix.
You could leave the lilac where it is and when it sends out the suckers later in the season you can move them. This way you're not risking losing the mature plant until you've established new parts of it. If there's no sentimental attachment, just get a new one from a local nursery when they're available.
