I would not top the tree…this will end up either destroying the tree or horribly disfiguring it. I would suggest just removing the tree entirely if its small enough to do so and plant a crabapple, dogwood, or something similar. If it is small enough to remove without too much trouble maybe you know someone that can take it and then you can visit the tree!
